                                                        International Conference

Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Digitalization: Opportunities and Challenges

                                                              4th February, 2017

Entrepreneurs play an important role in the economic development of a country. Joseph Schumpeter, the well known economist of all times, in his theory of “creative destruction” highlights the importance of innovators to bring new product and concepts to the market, improve market efficiency, build wealth, create jobs and enhance economic growth.

The ability of entrepreneurs to create jobs is particularly relevant to India. By 2020, 63percent of India’s populations will be of working age. Cashing in on this demographic dividend will require India to create 69 million additional appropriate jobs, as well as jobs for those that are currently unemployed. Estimates indicate that India will need 115 million additional non-farm jobs in the next decade. Creation of new businesses will therefore be an important avenue for absorption of these workers.

India has seen a wave of successful entrepreneurship. Bangalore has been listed within the World’s 20 leading start up cities in the 2015 start up Genome Project Ranking. It is also ranked as one of the world’s five fastest growing start up cities. Nevertheless, much of this entrepreneurship is limited to the IT, e-commerce and m-commerce sector. Further, the number of entrepreneurial ventures remains small relative to India’s population. Only 0.09 companies were registered for every 1000 working age person-among the lowest rates of G20 countries in 2011. The Global Entrepreneurship monitor that tracks entrepreneurial activity, found that new business ownership rate for India in 2013 was same as in 2008. To create new jobs, India must move beyond its reliance on IT. Many sectors in India provide opportunities for entrepreneurial growth such as IT infrastructure, biotechnology, health care and education are to grow several times. The Global Innovation Index 2016 ranks India at 66th position out of 128 countries and the creative output is still an issue where it is positioned at 94 number.

This conference provides a forum for rich dialogue on taking lessons from contemporary research on the subject and provides insights on innovation, entrepreneurship and digitalization.
